Category: Research Location: BROOKLYN COLLEGE Job Description General Description Researchers at the Brooklyn College Cancer Center (BCCC-CURE) are seeking a motivated Student Researcher (Intern) with an interest in cancer epidemiology, geospatial methods, and health inequities. The intern will receive training in survey analysis and geospatial research methods while contributing to an American Cancer Society-funded study on breast and colorectal cancer screening utilization and incidence in New York City. This position offers a unique opportunity to engage with one of the largest datasets of US-born and international-born populations and to contribute to a community-engaged cancer disparities research project. This position is hybrid, with flexibility for some remote work. All data analysis must take place on-site at Brooklyn College. Other Duties Analyze multiple years (2015–2019) of NYC Community Health Survey (CHS) data on cancer screening rates, and New York State Cancer Registry data on cancer cases. Examine variations in breast and colorectal cancer screening behaviors by nativity and neighborhood. Explore how social and structural determinants of health influence cancer screening rates. Compare cancer screening behaviors with the geospatial distribution of cancer incidence. Assist in preparing tables, graphs, conference posters, and other presentation materials. Assist in preparing results for community engagement activities, including advisory board meetings and a Town Hall session. Assist with recruitment, outreach, planning, and hosting of Town Hall Session. Other duties as assigned. Training & Learning Opportunities Hands-on training in survey data analysis and geospatial methods. Experience with cancer epidemiology, health inequities research, and community-based participatory research. Mentorship from faculty researchers on research methods, data management, and dissemination strategies. Opportunities to co-author presentations and publications may be available. Qualifications Current undergraduate or graduate student in public health, community health, sociology, psychology or a related field. Coursework in statistics and/or epidemiology required. Interest in cancer epidemiology, geospatial research, and health inequities. Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently as well as in a team. Excellent academic writing skills. Preferred Skills: Experience with statistical software (SAS, SPSS, or similar). Familiarity with GIS tools (ArcGIS, QGIS, or other spatial analysis software). Prior experience working with large datasets or survey data.
