Job Summary
The Medication Aide is responsible for safely and accurately administering medications to residents in accordance with physician orders, facility policies, and North Carolina state regulations. This position plays a vital role in ensuring residents’ health, safety, and well-being while supporting daily care routines within the home.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
· Administer prescribed medications to residents following the “Six Rights” of medication administration (right resident, medication, dose, route, time, and documentation).
· Record medication administration and maintain accurate medication administration records (MARs).
· Observe residents for side effects or adverse reactions and report any changes promptly to the nurse, supervisor, or administrator.
· Assist residents with activities of daily living (ADLs) as needed, including hygiene, grooming, and mobility.
· Maintain a clean, organized, and safe medication storage area.
· Monitor and reorder medication supplies as needed.
· Participate in care planning and resident assessments as required.
· Follow infection control procedures and universal precautions.
· Communicate effectively with residents, families, and staff to ensure continuity of care.
· Participate in staff meetings, training sessions, and in-service education.
Qualifications
· Must be at least 18 years of age.
· Completion or must be able to complete the North Carolina-approved Medication Aide training program (10-hour or 5-hour course).
· Current Medication Aide certification from the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation (DHSR).
· Must be listed in good standing on the NC Medication Aide Registry and NC Nurse Aide I Registry.
· Current CPR and First Aid certification preferred.
· Ability to read, write, and follow written and verbal instructions.
· Compassionate and patient demeanor, with strong communication and teamwork skills.
Physical Requirements
· Must be able to stand, walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs.
· Able to assist residents with mobility and transfers as needed.
· Work may involve exposure to infectious materials and cleaning chemicals.
Example Schedule / Work Setting
Medication Aides may work day, evening, or night shifts, including weekends and holidays. The role requires flexibility and reliability in providing continuous resident care in a small group home or adult care setting.
