Occupational Therapist
Purpose Statement
The job of an Occupational Therapist is performed for the purpose/s of assessing a student's functional development level, providing appropriate treatment to meet individual student objectives, and providing recommendations for program development and student placement.


Essential Functions

  • Implements therapeutic activities to address deficits in the area/s of fine motor, visual motor, sensory motor, and visual perceptual as indicated on the IEP (504 plan).
  • Administers, interprets, and writes up assessments in the areas of fine motor, visual motor, sensory motor and visual perceptual how these areas affect a student's academic performance.
  • Instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons for the purpose of supporting the student's IEP (or 504) plan.
  • Respond to consultation requests that require adaptation or modification of a student's educational environment.
  • Meets on a regular basis with Occupational Therapist Assistant through a collaborative process to review and inspect all aspects of occupational therapy services rendered. The level of supervision is commensurate with the education and training of the occupational therapy assistant and district guidelines.
  • Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans (IEP, 504) for services and/or making recommendations.
  • Participates in meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that state standards and/or federal mandates are achieved (IEP or 504 process).
  • Prepares a wide variety of written materials (e.g. progress reports, daily treatment notes, Medicaid billing, student activities, correspondence, IEP's, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference and/or conveying information.
  • Presents information (e.g. student performance data, and clinical feedback, etc.) for the purpose of communicating information, gaining feedback and ensuring adherence to established internal controls.
  • Assesses/recommends need for adaptive equipment and/or environmental modifications as needed for successful implementation of a student's functional goals.
  • Participates/facilitates in meetings, workshops, and seminars for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform school based functions.
  • Provides services to students in multiple school locations on an itinerant basis.
  • Research resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing a student's functional goals.
  • May supervise a Certified Occupational Therapist Assistant
  • Participates in required professional development.
  • Participate in monthly department continuing education and committees.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities including collaboration and co-treating students with other district personnel.

Mental Requirements

Learning Development- Level E Knowledge in a recognized professional field or technological discipline sufficient to command various principles, facts, and practical applications. Learning development is obtained by the completion of a college curriculum resulting in a bachelor's degree in a specialized field; advanced mathematics, very advanced language development, proficient understanding of practical systems.

Problem Solving - Level 3 Work situations are of sufficient scope and variety that significant interpretation and evaluation is required to successfully recognize and define problems. Highly technical judgments and/or constructive thinking involved. Alternative solutions must be considered and short-term action plans must be developed and sequenced.

Physical Requirements

Physical Skill - Level A Basic level of learned physical skill is required. No special coordination beyond that used for normal mobility and handling of everyday objects and materials is needed to perform the job satisfactorily.

Physical Effort - Level 1 Minimal physical exertion is required. Most job time is spent sitting with occasional walking. Occasional lifting, guiding, and carrying of lightweight materials or equipment.

Social Requirements

Human Relations Skill- Level B Job requires patience in communication and well-developed verbal skills to exchange technical or complex information with individuals or small, informal groups. skills in establishing harmonious relationships and gaining cooperation are important.

Scope of Contacts - Level 2 Interpersonal contacts extend to peers in other work groups, or to clients/customers who speak the language, either within or outside the organization. interactions with higher levels of authority beyond the immediate supervisor must be conducted on an intermittent basis.

Work Environment

Performance Environment - Level B Work pressure, disturbances of work flow, and/or irregularities in work schedule are expected and occur on an intermittent basis. Changes in the performance environment require occasional upgrading of skills.

Physical Working Conditions - Level 1 Generally good working conditions. Little or no exposure to extremes in noise, temperature, etc. little or no exposure to safety or health hazards.

Additional Job Requirements: Minimum Qualifications
  • Training in Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles and practices, and positive behavior support (PBS)
  • Experience in working with students with Emotional Disabilities, Intellectual Disabilities and Autism Spectrum Disorders is required

Experience, Education, and Certifications

Experience: Job related experience within specialized field is required.

Education: Graduation from an occupational therapy program accredited by ACOTE or predecessor. 20 CEU every 2 years OT License, 36 hours every 3 years for NBCOT certification

Certifications/Clearances: AZ State OT Licensure NBCOT certification recommended. Valid Driver's License & Evidence of Insurability. Must possess a valid Arizona DPS Level One IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card while employed. Obtain and maintain current Crisis Prevention Intervention certification
