The Stockton Police Department is looking for a (PART-TIME) Police Records Assistant I. Prior to appointment, eligible candidates may be required to submit to and successfully pass a background investigation, which will include fingerprinting and a medical examination which includes a back evaluation.
Under general supervision, performs varied office support work related to police records functions; performs related work as assigned.
Principal duties include training new police record assistants and part-time employees; assisting with performance evaluations and training updates for current employees; receiving non-emergency calls from citizens reporting crimes; typing reports of crimes and preparing a daily report of crime information collected; receiving and answering teletypes and maintaining records of teletypes received; entering and retrieving information using an on-line or personal computer system; monitoring and transmitting information to field officers using a two-way radio; breaking, sorting, and organizing citations and other police documents for the court; maintaining records and files of all citations, warrants, and related police records; checking files for criminal record of subjects for authorized personnel; reviewing dealers' slips of gun sales to determine if purchaser has criminal record; responding to requests for copies of police reports in accordance with established Police Department policies and procedures; receiving money at counter and issuing receipts for copies of accident and other reports; providing general public information at the counter; coding and tallying data from police records and reports and preparing periodic statistical reports for management review; logging stolen, recovered, and towed vehicles; receiving and processing criminal and traffic warrants; instructing new Police Records Assistant staff and may act in the absence of the supervisor; and may provide court testimony as required.
Education/Experience: Police Records Assistant I - Equivalent to a high school diploma or GED. Other Requirements: Specified positions may require a valid California driver's license. Typing accurately at a rate of 40 net words per minute from printed copy. Must be willing to work rotating shifts and be willing to work weekend and holiday shifts and stay over on their shift when absences occur.
Knowledge of: Principles and practices of supervision; office practices and procedures, including filing and the operation of standard office equipment; correct English usage, including grammar, spelling, and punctuation; basic record keeping principals and procedures; basic data processing principles and the use of word processing or personal computing equipment; and basic business arithmetic.
Skill in: Performing detailed clerical work accurately; organizing and maintaining office records and files; communicating tactfully and effectively with the public; making accurate arithmetic calculations; using initiative and sound independent judgement within established guidelines; operating standard office equipment, including a word processor; prioritizing work and coordinating several activities; and establishing and maintaining effective working relations with those contacted in the course of the work.
The examination process may include an oral exam or a training and experience evaluation examination weighted 100%. However, the City reserves the right to utilize alternative testing methods if deemed necessary. Candidates must receive a minimum passing score of 70%, as determined by the relative performance of all candidates in all portions of the examination. In the event of identical ratings, candidates' names will be arranged in order of application date/time, and, if the same, then arranged alphabetically.
