The Pulmonary Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurse provides specialized nursing care for patients with acute pulmonary conditions including lung transplants, pulmonary hypertension, and ventilator management. They collaborate closely with physicians and a multidisciplinary team to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care, ensuring high standards and patient safety in a 9-bed unit with a 3:1 patient ratio.   The Pulmonary Progressive Care Unit Registered Nurses provide high-quality care for patients experiencing acute medical conditions such as Pre and Post Lung Transplant, Pulmonary Hypertension, Ventilator dependent/weaning, and special drips while working closely with physicians and other healthcare professionals to deliver timely and effective treatment. Our unit is supported by an Advanced Practice Nurse and multiple physician teams. The PPCU is a 9-bed unit with private rooms with a patient focus on weaning respiratory support and a multi-disciplinary therapy team for patient rehabilitation.

Acute Care Medicine manage patients with a full range of clinical issues-from significant blood dyscrasias, advanced endocrine pathology, heart and renal failure, GI conditions, infectious diseases, asthma and a multitude of other conditions and diseases. ¿Because of our patient acuity, we provide advanced training to bring new nurses to the highest level of functioning.¿¿Each unit is lead by a clinical manager and lead charge nurse. ¿The unit is supported by an advanced practice nurse. ¿Additionally each unit is assigned a case manager, social worker, physical therapist, dietitian, and pharmacist. ¿This multidisciplinary team works in conjunction with the physicians, nurses and patient care technicians to provide quality patient care.

Role Purpose

Provides direct patient care activities including assessment, diagnosis, planning implementation, and evaluation within the guidelines of the standards of nursing care.

Responsibilities

• Promotes patient and family centered care in a healing environment. Educates patients and their families on how to manage their illness or injury, including post treatment home care needs and medication administration.
• Participates in activities that promote patient safety, quality and regulatory compliance. Participates in professional development.
• Develops, implements, and documents individual plans of care with defined goals in collaboration with other members of the interprofessional team and patient, family or caregiver in accordance with the established guidelines and standards of nursing care. Proactively plans and ensures communication of the plan of care across the continuum of care.
• Uses critical nursing skills to assess and evaluate physical, psychosocial, and emotional needs according to standards of care. Assess patient preferences and barriers to involvement in care, including their values, emotional, spiritual, cultural, and population-specific needs.
• BJC has determined this is a safety-sensitive position. The ability to work in a constant state of alertness and in a safe manner is an essential function of this job.
