The Waste, Streets & Recycling ("WSR") Assistant Manager assists in developing and implementing procedures for disposing of waste, hazardous waste, hazardous recycling, recycling, and contaminated materials per governmental regulations and University goals. The WSR Assistant Manager assists in developing systems to track, purchase, and care for all waste, streets, and recycling duties and infrastructure, including parking lots, snow and ice control, street sweeping, and recycling collection. The WSR Assistant Manager is responsible for the direct supervision of the equipment, employee time management, purchases, requisitions, and management support. The WSR assistant manager is responsible for filling in for the manager, supervisors, and CDL drivers in the event of an absence and any time the need is presented. Working independently and as a team, exercising good judgment and discretion is essential to this job. Essential functions include availability during school closings, delays, shutdowns, emergencies, and severe weather incidents, performing snow removal activities, supporting campus events, and working scheduled and unscheduled hours as emergency needs arise. Responsibilities also include wearing appropriate personal protective equipment, assisting in planning and directing WSR maintenance and operations, tracking and accounting for waste removal programs, ensuring efficient waste disposal services, coordinating with WSR staff and subcontractors, maintaining equipment, and upkeeping accountability systems. The role requires leadership ability, flexible scheduling, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Qualifications include a high school diploma or GED, 5+ years of relevant administrative and managerial experience, CDL with a reputable driving record, leadership skills, state driver's license, computer proficiency, ability to lift 50+ pounds, and strong communication and organizational skills. The working environment includes office, shop, and outdoor settings with exposure to various elements and requires use of personal protective equipment. Driving a vehicle for job functions is required with proof of valid Virginia driver's license and insurance.
